If you haven’t been living under a rock, you must have probably had to answer this question at least once in your lifetime.
With everybody connecting on social media (and not anywhere else), this question comes loaded- especially if it’s coming from someone with a huge following.
People forget about why they even got on Instagram or Twitter or any social media on the first place and begin worrying about their follower count.
It’s the same old-same old imperative that goes back to our school days – “Are you the popular kid?”
Sometimes, even brands do the same mistake of placing high value on the number of followers their influencers have.
Actually, influencers are classified and segmented based on the number of followers they have on their socials.
And I say that’s a dumb thing.
And I have my points to back up my stand as well.
Imagine this.
Influencer A with 10 K followers. But when they promote a product in their posts- only 100 people buy it on an average.
Influencer B with 2K followers. But when they promote a product in their posts 150 people buy it on an average.
So who’s the better influencer?
It’s high time brands and you (especially if you’re a business owner) to concentrate on metrics other than follower count – engagement, conversations around the product, leads and ultimately sales.
What you should be concentrating is on creating quality content and solving your customers’ problem.
Also keep in mind why your personal blog or business account is on social.
Are you a 40-year-old guy who just wants to reconnect with your school mates on social channels? You don’t need 5,000 followers.
Are you a Coimbatore-based supplier for locally grown organic produce? You don’t need followers who can’t buy your services or from places that you don’t deliver to.
There are exceptions. Like:
Are you trying to create a community-based learning online?
Are you a business/influencer who can ship products/services to anywhere on the globe?
Are you an artist or a celebrity who’s trying to build online presence?
Then you may not have a problem aiming for higher numbers.
But make sure, higher numbers isn’t the only goal.
One thing I’m not tired of repeating – get your priorities straight and setting your business goals will become easier, realistic, achievable, and meaningful.
An onboarding exercise that I always do with my clients is to help them define their goals before taking up a project, this way I know exactly how I can help them while they realize what’s needed for their business.
So, in short: stop worrying on your follower count and start worrying about the quality of your content.
See you in another useful blog :)
