Some thoughts about Olympics I had during my morning coffee…

Let’s admit it. Olympics is an occasion when we as a nation are truly united (in embarrassment).

Despite our contingent bringing home a few medals, there’s a deeper corner inside us wishing, hoping, it was more.

I had that moment too. It brings back a lot of childhood memories. Like the time my math teacher used to make us miss PT to cover ‘extra’ portions. There’s at least a thousand math teachers in India who are perpetrators of this sin everyday and I hope they’re happy now looking at the Olympic leaderboard.

But you can't blame it all on math teachers (I wish it was possible though). We also have the government, politics and corruption and a million other stupid things.

Also, it’s not like you and I are cut out to be an Olympic athlete in the first place. However, moving past the embarrassments, the Tokyo Olympics has indeed taught me a few things that I could carry over to my life.

Olympics is all about pushing yourself to maximum human limits in the spirit of sportsmanship. And this Olympics is not an exception. The event itself, hosted after (uh-oh, during?) the pandemic is an embodiment of that spirit.

Plus, I got my interest piqued in a few more things too. Usually I’m always up to speed with combat sports like boxing and wrestling, but my oh my, I know so little.

One such sport was Rugby Sevens. It was a coordinated mayhem of brutal strength, violence and tact. It’s like the modern equivalent of war. I wish it was popular in our country as well, or do we have clubs here as well? Let me know if you know.

Skateboarding. According to me, it was the coolest of all events. To see grownups falling down on their asses was so much satisfying as seeing those rowdy little teenagers dominate the event.

The javelin. If it were not for Neeraj Chopra, I’d have never bothered to see the event. And watching the javelin event this time was like witnessing a CSK match during the last overs, especially with a gold at stake. Yeah, CSK matches are the only cricket matches I ever see.

And the highlight of every Olympics, the marathon. Kipchoge is a beast and he brought it again. He’s literally superhuman I guess. How did I miss the surprise from Italy this time on the 100 M sprint? Not to mention our country’s own 4x400 team making 4th place. That’s something to be proud of, for real.

At the end of this Tokyo Olympics, I feel more motivated to push myself physically at the gym and mentally in my profession. Hope that’s the case with you too.

What new perspectives did you get from this Olympics? I’m all ears.

PS: The coffee became cold by the time I finished this blog post.

PPS: Mom told she wouldn't reheat it anyways.

PPPS: I drank it anyways.
