The Copywriter’s Independence Manifesto

Freedom is...

  1. Having a life outside work...

  2. Not having to do every single change the client fantasises about...

  3. Not getting briefed by the account team at Friday evening...

  4. Having a great account executive that fights for your (great) idea with the client...

  5. Boldly objecting to a shitty idea, even if it’s your boss’s...

  6. When the management pays you for overtime...

  7. Not having to wait for inspiration...

  8. Not having to suck up to a stupid change just because it came from ‘top management’...

  9. Getting the opportunity to produce great work based on great ideas...

  10. Not succumbing to the writer’s block...

  11. Getting specific feedbacks other than ‘catchy’, ‘impressive’, etc...

  12. Not having to put up with insanely ridiculous deadlines...

  13. When agencies are keen on results rather than awards...

  14. Not having to see someone else take credit for your ideas...

  15. Not getting underpaid for the value you bring to your work...

  16. Not ‘interning’ or ‘working for free’ just because it’s a famous/award winning “hot creative shop” in the city...

  17. Not afraid to make mistakes...

  18. Not ostracised for having made a mistake...

  19. Not settling for ‘good enough’, but aiming for ‘the best possible’...

  20. The client being clear in the objective of their communication...

  21. When creatives are not being taken for granted...

  22. Not judging your craft based on your appearance/ethnicity...

  23. Not having to be an irritably loud extrovert just because you’re a creative...

  24. When your agency cares for your personal, emotional, cultural health...

  25. When your agency understands that it’s ‘work from home’ and not ‘live at work...

Happy birthday, India. Get back to work, writers.
